Can I teach my freshcopy to tell me how many letters there are in a word? For example I can teach him to answer; there are five letters in Idaho if I ask him "How many letters are there in Idaho?". But can I learn it to tell me the number of letters in a word it hasnt heard before? If this is the case then I truly believe that HAL has much bigger possibilities then just beeing an answermachine...

But no, he is currently unable to count the letters of a word - unless you teach him, word by word. The reason being that he views words as integral wholes. Sort of similar to how youngsters learn to recognize a blue crayon, but it may be some while before they can differentiate between meditteranean, midnight or azure.
