Friends,

When I wrote my thesis twelve years ago ANNs and expert systems seemed to be up and coming topics in the world of AI. I have just began my PhD and I would like to research their usage in business further, but it seems like their usage has dimmed somewhat. I have been out of the field for a few years and I need some updating! Has newer technology taken their place or are Neural Networks and expert systems still prevalent?

Thanks,

Benjamin

Talking about neural network is irrelevant. If you do not know the brain's plastic function systems, having an network is pointless because it lacks primary judgment sector which is called in common terms "instinct". Network with no judgment sector is no more than a glorified storage system.

Yes you seem to be on the right track, neural network is not dynamic enough, also means not active enough. Therefore at least one essential thing which neural network lacks, is the ability to model processes.
